This is the deluxe edition of an iconic version of Perrault's fairy tales with images by Dulac that unite Art Nouveau fantasy with references to Persian miniatures and a sensibility that looks forwards to Art Deco. Quiller-Couch's translations of Charles Perrault's Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast keep the lightness and wit of the originals, lost in more recent versions. Dulac's images use 18th century clothing and interiors to refer to the context of Perrault's tales, but with fantastic and Orientalist elements that set them apart from designs by his contemporaries like Arthur Rackham. The plates alone are sensational.
